The Kangaroo Island Biocoke Project
PROJECT OVERVIEW
On Kangaroo Island, South Australia, the Black Summer Bushfires claimed the lives of 2 people, destroyed 87 homes and burned over 210,000ha of land including a 14,000ha FSC certified timber plantation.
This has resulted in the need to dispose of ~5 million tonnes of fire-damaged plantation trees.
Given the island’s remote location and the low value of the biomass, there is no economically viable path for use or disposal, other than burning.
This has created the opportunity for the Kangaroo Island (KI) Biocoke Project to utilise the fire-damaged timber as a feedstock for our value-added biocoke product, displacing the use of a significant amount of fossil coal.
All biomass supplied to the project is harvested using GPS-tracked machinery, ensuring complete transparency and end-to-end traceability.
The KI Biocoke Project is in the process of becoming EUDR/RED III compliant.
PROJECT IMPACT
Approx 1.1 million tonnes of coal kept in the ground
Approx. 4 million tonnes CO2 abatement
The KI Biocoke Project also brings over 50 green economy jobs to regional South Australia, supporting skill development and training in net zero technologies.
